Industrial Hygiene and Safety for Hazard Communication

Course Description and Objectives

This course is an introduction to the role of industrial hygiene and safety principles in hazard communication.  An emphasis is placed on the physical hazards of chemicals and the control and management of exposures to chemicals.  The requirements of the new OSHA HazCom 2012 16-section SDS serve as the framework for the course.  This is not a "How To" course for SDS and label writing.  Rather, the goal of this course is to provide participants with an understanding of the technical skills and background necessary to develop, evaluate, and/or apply sections 4 through 10 of a 16-section SDS and the corresponding portions of a label.

This is a basic course and there are no prerequisites.  However, it is recommended that participants have a working knowledge of MSDS and labels and that they have either taken the SCHC course Toxicology for Hazard Communication or that they be comfortable with the basic concepts of toxicology.

Intended Audience

Hazard communication professionals looking to broaden their understanding of ecotoxicology and to sharpen their hazard determination and risk assessment skills.

Robert Skoglund, Ph.D., DABT, CIH

Dr. Skoglund is the Director of Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs at Covestro LLC.  His responsibilities include product EHS and stewardship, including hazard communication, for North America.

Denese A. Deeds, CIH

Denese Deeds is the Director of Chemical Regulatory Services and co-founder of Industrial Health & Safety Consultants, Inc.  In this role she prepares MSDS and other hazard communication documents and assists companies with overall chemical regulatory compliance.

Robert Roy, Ph.D., DABT

Dr. Roy is a Lead Toxicology Specialist at 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota. His primary responsibilities include assessing the human health hazards and safety of products and other materials for several 3M business units. In addition, he leads the development of the 3M Occupational Exposure Guidelines; and plays a leadership role for California Proposition 65 compliance, consumer product labels, and hazard determination, hazard communication, and human risk assessment issues.

Ann Thompson, Ph.D.

Dr. Thompson is a Technical Manager at the 3M Company.  Her responsibilities include hazard communication, regulatory toxicology support, training and managing the emergency hotline. She has provided product EHS support for a number of industrial, healthcare and consumer product divisions within 3M and has developed the business processes, training and teams that help meet 3M's Safety Data Sheet and labeling obligations for REACH and GHS.
