ANSI: The Combined Standard

About This Webinar:

The American Chemistry Council is the sponsor for two ANSI (American National Standards Institute) standards. These two ANSI standards, Z400.1 (MSDS) and Z129.1 (Precautionary Labeling) have a long history of providing guidance to the chemical industry. The standards contain guidance on the classification of chemical hazards and how to inform users of those hazards with precautionary labeling and safety data sheets.

An effort to combine the standards was started in 2008. . . by the date of this event, the two will (should have) become one!

This webinar will review the details of the new combined standard, and the value that it adds to Hazard Communication efforts in the United States. There has been effort to move closer to GHS (Purple Book) as much as possible, without conflicting with the OSHA HazCom Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200).

About the Speaker:

Dave is co-chair of the ACC work group to revise and combine the ANSI Standards for MSDSs (ANSI Z400.1) and Precautionary Labeling (ANSI Z129.1). Dave served on the work groups for two previous revisions of the MSDS Standard and co-chaired the work group that revised the latest Precautionary Labeling Standard. He is a corresponding member of the ACC Hazard Communication work group that is following and providing input on the GHS implementation.

At Monsanto Company, Dave has been involved in all aspects of SDS development and production for 17 years. In addition, he has had responsibility in label development, policy setting, and is currently a Regulatory Compliance Lead. He is the North American and Europe-Africa process lead for SDS compliance and the SDS authoring system, and provides technical assistance for other world areas. In addition, he is responsible for Hazardous Materials in transportation and deals with classification, training and compliance reviews for North America. He is an active member of Monsanto’s global Chemical Stewardship Work Group.

Dave is also involved with CropLife America as the Vice Chairman of the Interregional Coordinating Council (IRCC) Transportation & Distribution (T&D) Committee, and the European Crop Protection Association’s Classification and Labelling Expert Group where he co-authored guidance documents on the EU Classification, Labelling and Packaging (CLP) Regulation and related directives and regulations.

Dave is currently the Vice-President of SCHC. He has been a member since 2001 and chairs the SCHC-OSHA Alliance Ad-Hoc Committee. As part of the Alliance, he co-authored and co-presented a one-day course on SDS authoring. He also provides technical review for GHS Fact Sheet activities. He is an instructor to the MSDS and Labelling Workshop Professional Development Course that will be offered in conjunction with SCHC's Fall Meeting, October 2 - 6, 2010 in Arlington, VA.
