Engineering Controls and Personal Protective Equipment Selection (0.5-day)
PDF Brochure — Course Offering: Spring 2017
PPE Selection, Engineering Controls, Ventilation, Occupational Exposure Limits, PEL, TLV, MSDS Section 8
The Advanced Topics in EHS series of courses were designed to expand on topics that are introduced in the basic SCHC courses. The topic personal protective equipment (PPE) and engineering controls was introduced in the SCHC course Industrial Hygiene and Safety for the Hazard Communicator.
The goal of this course is to provide a more detailed look at the information needed to complete Section 6-8 of the SDS including various considerations in the use of engineering controls and personal protective equipment in controlling exposures in the workplace. Both normal operations and emergency situations such as fire and accidental releases will be discussed. As hazard communicators, we often write SDS that contain little useful guidance to our end-users on how to protect themselves from chemical exposures in the workplace. Since the purpose of SDS and label are not only to communicate hazards but to recommend control measures that will protect workers from these hazards, improvement in quality of this information should be a goal of the SDS author.
To assure that participants receive a greater understanding in the use of PPE, samples of the different types of gloves, eye and face protection, protective clothing and respirators will be modeled and available for inspection.
In addition to presenting information on the concepts of engineering controls and the use and selection of PPE, information resources to assist in the development of these recommendations for the SDS will be presented in detail. OSHA, NIOSH, PPE manufacturer’s websites and other resources will be reviewed.
The final topic of the course will be examples of SDS sections 6-8, what information should be included, how much detail is appropriate and a discussion of the liability issues.
This is considered to be an advanced course for hazard communicators and SDS authors but is not intended to be an advanced industrial hygiene course. While there are no formal prerequisites for this course, it is strongly recommended that participants have a working knowledge of SDS and labels and that they have either taken the SCHC course Industrial Hygiene and Safety for the Hazard Communicator or that they are comfortable with the basic principles of industrial hygiene.
Hazard communication professionals looking to strengthen their understanding of the use of engineering controls and PPE in the workplace and improve their SDS recommendations in these SDS sections.
