Description:

This course is designed to be an overview of the European Union’s REACH Regulation’s requirements for the extended Safety Data Sheet (eSDS). This course will cover the REACH-specific information that is required in Sections 1-16 of the SDS, as well as the requirement to include exposure scenarios in the annex to the SDS.

An emphasis is placed on how chemical safety assessments impact the eSDS and the need to incorporate information received from suppliers into the main body of the SDS and the annex. The requirements and available options for presenting annex information for both pure substances and mixtures will be presented. In addition, the obligations for downstream users and formulators will be addressed.  The skills developed in the course will better allow participants to author eSDSs that meet the regulatory requirements under REACH.

This is an advanced course. While there are no formal prerequisites for this course, it is recommended that participants have a working knowledge of the principles of hazard communication and risk assessment. Participants should have taken the SCHC courses Hazard Communication for the European Union and REACH - Chemical Safety Assessments or be comfortable with the principles presented in these courses.

Robert Skoglund, Ph.D., DABT, CIH

Dr. Skoglund is a Senior Laboratory Manager at the 3M Company.  His primary responsibilities include corporate oversight of material EHS issues including global hazard communication and other applied and regulatory toxicology issues and programs.

Adam Bettmann

Adam Bettmann is an Advanced Regulatory Analyst at 3M Company in St Paul, Minnesota. His primary responsibilities include authoring global safety data sheets including the REACH eSDS and supervise a team of global SDS authors.

Paul Brigandi

Mr. Brigandi is a recognized expert in US and international hazard communication regulations.  The majority of Paul’s career was with Mobil Oil Corporation (20 years), where he was involved in a wide variety of research assignments.  He spent 10 years in the Product Safety group where he led multi-disciplinary teams, on the planning and implementation of global product safety compliance programs, not to mention writing thousands of SDS along the way.  While at Mobil Paul was a member of the OECD Expert Group on classification criteria for mixtures and he chaired both the BIAC to the OECD Expert Mixtures Group and the American Chemistry Council Global Harmonization Task Force. Paul is currently an Executive Consultant with CGI Technologies and Solutions Inc. where he has led the design phase of projects which delivered commercial software that support compliance with GHS hazard communication requirements and with the REACH Regulation. He holds a BS in chemistry from Rutgers University.

Robert Roy, Ph.D., DABT

Dr. Roy is a Lead Toxicology Specialist at 3M in St. Paul, Minnesota. His primary responsibilities include assessing the human health hazards and safety of products and other materials for several 3M business units. In addition he plays a leadership role in 3M Occupational Exposure Guideline development; California Proposition 65 compliance; consumer product labels; and hazard determination, hazard communication, and risk assessment issues.

Scott Strand

Scott Strand is an Advance Information Specialist at the 3M Company.  His primary responsibilities include the development, maintenance and enhancement of IT systems and business processes for chemical data management and hazard communication.  In addition he has over 15 years of experience in the assessment, classification, and communication of chemical hazards and risks.
