This course is designed to be an overview of the unique health hazards and risks associated with nanometer-sized materials (nanomaterials). This course will assume that participants have a basic understanding of the concepts and terminology of toxicology and will focus on the unique aspects of nanomaterials, including their physical-chemical characteristics, potential to cause adverse health effects, toxicokinetics, and exposure pathways. In addition, there will be a discussion of the unique hazard communication and regulatory considerations for these materials. The skills developed in the course will allow participants to better participate in the assessment, management, and communication of the hazards and risks of nanomaterials.

This is an advanced course. While there are no formal prerequisites for this course, it is recommended that participants have a working knowledge of the principles of hazard communication, toxicology and risk assessment. Participants should have taken the SCHC course Toxicology for Hazard Communication, Hazard Determination and Risk Assessment, and Industrial Hygiene and Safety for Hazard Communication or be comfortable with the principles presented in these courses.
