Objectives:

-  Highlight importance of having full visibility into hazards that companies manufacture or market

-  Why is it so important to get hazards right for compliance and for proactive product stewardship?

Abstract:

In response to both regulatory and consumer pressures, companies are increasingly committed to characterizing and communicating chemical hazards to workers and the public.  Robust hazard assessment is central to a number of key compliance actions, including the dissemination of safety data sheets, protection of confidential business information, and submission of various regulatory obligations (e.g., chemical registrations).  A comprehensive understanding of the hazards of your products (including what is known and what is not known) is becoming more important as the trend to disclose ingredients grows.

Arriving at well-researched hazard conclusions can be challenging, particularly since publicly available data on chemical toxicity is rapidly expanding.  This webinar will cover obstacles to arriving at sound hazard conclusions, methods for conducting a robust hazard management program, and ways of communicating consistent, supportable hazard information internally and to the public.  Maintaining a hazard assessment program requires significant resources including well-qualified toxicologists and chemists.  This investment, however, not only ensures basic compliance needs are met, but sets the platform for proactive product stewardship activities.  Some of the activities can include engaging in efforts to "green" supply chains, developing internal standards that limit human health and environmental risks, and being more responsive to customer demands for sustainable products.

Agenda:

Why hazard assessment?
What are the key challenges for getting it right?
Why is it important to get it right?
How can I use what I have done to build an active product stewardship program?

The learning session will be followed by Q&A.

PRESENTER

Ari S. Lewis has almost 15 years of consulting experience, with an emphasis on toxicological evaluation and human health risk assessment. Her expertise in toxicology and risk assessment allows her to lead and contribute to a variety of projects, including, product safety evaluations, regulatory comment, and green chemistry assessments. She has published and presented extensively on the carcinogenic risks of metals, and provided direct input to US EPA on risk assessment issues. She has extensive expertise in conducting hazard assessments according the Globally Harmonized System (GHS) for Labelling and Classification. With this expertise, Ms. Lewis has led several risk ranking and hazard evaluation projects, including the oversight of a program involving the hazard assessment of thousands of chemicals for the purpose of new chemical notifications and SDS updates in multiple countries. She also serves a leadership role on Gradient’s Global Chemical Compliance and Product Stewardship Practice. Ms. Lewis also has expertise in developing quantitative human health risk criteria for chemicals with limited toxicity data. Ms. Lewis earned her M.S. at Cornell University in Environmental Toxicology.
